Before joining IndiGo, Pieter Elbers served as the CEO of KLM, where he earned a total compensation package of €1.4 million (over ₹12 crore) in 2022. This included a salary of €480,543 and a transition payment of €894,214.

A court ruling confirmed that Elbers was entitled to these payments, even under state aid restrictions imposed during the pandemic. KLM also bore an additional tax burden of €619,100 related to his severance payment.

Pieter Elbers’ Salary at IndiGo

After stepping into the role of CEO at IndiGo in June 2022, Elbers continued to command a significant pay package. In March 2023, he received performance stock units (PSUs) valued at ₹12.52 crore (approximately €1.42 million). This was in addition to his annual salary, which is estimated to be around ₹5 crore.

Altogether, Elbers’ total compensation at IndiGo, including salary, PSUs, and bonuses, is estimated to be close to ₹17 crore (around €2 million). If IndiGo’s financial performance continues to improve in FY24-25, Elbers is expected to receive additional PSUs, further increasing his earnings.

IndiGo’s Financial Growth Under Elbers

Since Elbers took over as CEO, IndiGo has seen impressive financial growth:

  • 2022-23: Revenue grew 110% to ₹544,465 million, with cash reserves increasing by 28.5% to ₹234,243 million.
  • 2023-24: Revenue rose 26.6% to ₹689,043 million, with a profit after tax of ₹81,725 million.

Estimated Net Worth

With a long career in aviation and high-profile roles at KLM and IndiGo, Pieter Elbers’ estimated net worth is likely to be in the range of ₹100-150 crore, bolstered by his substantial salaries, bonuses, and stock awards.

Elbers’ leadership has been instrumental in driving IndiGo’s growth and profitability, making him one of the highest-paid executives in the aviation industry.
