Donald Trump’s second term began with a flurry of executive orders that marked his vision for reshaping policies across various sectors. From trade to energy and immigration, here’s a look at the major actions taken by Trump in his first days back in office.

Tackling Inflation and Trade Policies

Trump signed a symbolic memorandum directing federal agencies to combat consumer inflation. In a significant move, he proposed a 25% tariff on Mexico and Canada starting February 1, with hints of possible tariffs on Chinese imports. This decision aims to press neighboring countries on border policies while creating uncertainty in the global trade market.

Energy Policies: National Emergency Declared

In a bold step, Trump declared a national energy emergency, promising expanded fossil fuel drilling and an end to Biden’s electric vehicle mandate. He also signed an order to rejoin traditional energy production methods and revoked Biden-era climate policies.

Immigration: Reverting to Tougher Measures

Trump reinstated his first-term immigration policies, including deporting all undocumented individuals. A national emergency at the U.S.-Mexico border was declared, deploying troops to restrict refugees and asylum seekers. He also promised to reinstate the “Remain in Mexico” policy and pledged to end birthright citizenship, although constitutional hurdles persist.

Environmental Rollbacks

The United States formally withdrew from the Paris Climate Agreement under Trump’s leadership. This decision aligns with his commitment to prioritizing economic growth over climate regulations. Trump’s order aims to undo stringent emissions limits and ban offshore drilling restrictions imposed during Biden’s tenure.

Domestic and Social Policies

Trump signed multiple orders targeting federal regulations. These include:

  • Freezing new federal hiring, except for military roles.
  • Empowering Elon Musk-led Department of Government Efficiency to recommend spending cuts.
  • Terminating DEI programs and rolling back transgender protections.

These measures reflect Trump’s focus on reducing federal spending and emphasizing traditional values.

Controversial Pardons and Policy Changes

Trump pardoned 1,500 individuals linked to the January 6 Capitol riots. He also ordered an end to federal prosecutions of individuals deemed “political opponents” of the Biden administration.

International Health Policy: WHO Exit

Trump signed an executive order for the United States to withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO), citing dissatisfaction with its pandemic response. This move could significantly impact global health initiatives as the U.S. is one of WHO’s largest contributors.

Trump’s early executive orders showcase his intention to reshape America’s domestic and international policies. These actions are poised to leave lasting impacts on trade, energy, immigration, and healthcare, sparking both support and criticism across the nation and beyond.
