Abu Dhabi has unveiled two new bridges aimed at reducing traffic congestion significantly. Built at a cost of AED315 million (approximately $85.7 million), the bridges connect Al Khaleej Al Arabi Street with Shakhbout Bin Sultan Street, enhancing the city’s transportation network.
Key Features of the Project
The development, a collaboration between the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) and the Integrated Transport Centre, promises to reduce intersection delays by 80% during morning peak hours. The project accommodates up to 7,500 vehicles per hour and features:
- A three-lane flyover bridge on Khaleej Al Arabi Street.
- A two-lane bridge linking Shakhbout Bin Sultan Street to Al Khaleej Al Arabi Street.
- Dedicated paths for pedestrians and cyclists.
Technical Specifications
The bridges span 742 meters and include ramps measuring 990 meters supported by 12 piers. A total of 15,354 cubic meters of concrete and 46,000 square meters of street landscaping were used. The project also features 61 streetlights and was completed with three million safe man-hours, ensuring zero lost-time incidents.
Benefits for Commuters
The bridges are strategically designed to serve key destinations such as Zayed International Airport, Mussafah, and Hudayriyat Island. The upgrades aim to reduce peak morning delays to just 20 seconds and include provisions for future expansions, such as an underpass project.
A Vision for Seamless Mobility
DMT Chairman Mohamed Ali Al Shorafa emphasized the project’s importance in creating a connected, efficient, and liveable city. “This infrastructure reflects our commitment to smart and sustainable transportation, reducing congestion, and improving safety while supporting Abu Dhabi’s rapid economic growth,” he said.
A Step Toward 2025 Transformation
As Abu Dhabi enters 2025, the bridges mark the beginning of several transformative projects designed to accommodate the city’s growing population and economic demands. The timely and budget-efficient delivery of this project underscores DMT’s dedication to modernizing Abu Dhabi’s infrastructure for a seamless transportation experience.
These bridges stand as a testament to Abu Dhabi’s vision of smart urban development, ensuring better connectivity and reduced travel time for residents and visitors alike.
