Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has announced a major infrastructure project in Tamil Nadu. The government has approved a ₹13.38 billion plan to construct an access-controlled highway along NH-40, spanning 28 kilometers. This highway will connect Walajapet/Ranipet to the Tamil Nadu-Andhra Pradesh border.
Key Highway Features
The new highway will include a four-lane main road with paved shoulders and two-lane service roads on both sides. To ease congestion, a 10-kilometer bypass will be built around Walajapet and Ranipet. The design aims to improve traffic for both long-distance travelers and local commuters.
Infrastructure Upgrades
Safety will be enhanced through the construction of four major bridges and two railway over-bridges. This corridor will boost connectivity between Chennai and key cities like Bengaluru, Tirupati, and Vellore.
Benefits for Vellore
Vellore, home to the Christian Medical College (CMC), will see improved access for patients and professionals. The highway is set to promote regional trade, tourism, and overall economic growth.
Support for Local Industries
The project will benefit Walajapet and Ranipet, hubs for the leather industry and small-scale engineering units. Improved infrastructure is expected to attract investments and support industries linked to Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL).
This development is expected to enhance connectivity, ensure safety, and drive economic growth in the region.
