The Bengaluru-Chennai expressway, a major infrastructure project, has opened its 71-kilometre stretch in Karnataka, while work continues on the Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu sections. Despite ongoing construction, the road is already being used by people in Bengaluru for long joyrides.

A New Route for Scenic Drives

Many are taking advantage of the newly opened road for long drives, turning back at the end of the stretch. According to reports, the expressway, which is expected to be fully operational by August next year, will drastically reduce travel time between Bengaluru and Chennai, cutting it from seven hours to just three.

Key Features of the Expressway

This ₹17,900-crore project is set to transform connectivity between the two cities. With a total length of 260 km, it will connect Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. The expressway will be a four-lane, high-speed corridor, making it the first greenfield expressway in South India.

Current Status and Future Plans

The expressway is being developed in three phases in Karnataka. The first two segments, from Hoskote to Malur and from Malur to Bangarpet, are already open, while the final section from Bangarpet to Bethamangala will soon be ready for traffic. No toll fees are being collected yet, and the official launch is expected in the near future.

Government’s Vision for Economic Growth

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has highlighted the economic benefits of the expressway, noting that it will ease traffic congestion and boost economic activity between Bengaluru and Chennai.
