Irish Rail has showcased the first of its new battery/overhead electric hybrid trains, a step toward modernising the country’s rail network. This hybrid train, built by French manufacturer Alstom, will undergo rigorous safety tests before entering service in 2026 on the Dublin to Drogheda route.
Next-Gen Hybrid Trains The new fleet features a blend of battery and traditional overhead electric power, providing a solution for extending service beyond current electrified lines. Irish Rail is set to commission up to 750 electric/battery-powered trains over the next decade, with a 15-year maintenance plan in place.
Enhanced Passengers Experience The trains are designed for efficiency and comfort, featuring walk-through carriages, priority seating, wheelchair spaces, and USB charging points. However, one downside is the lack of onboard toilets, with alternatives like extended station facilities being considered.
Safety & Accessibility Features The hybrid trains include advanced safety features such as built-in window breakers in emergency situations and extendable ramps for seamless boarding. Additionally, the trains are designed with larger bicycle areas and improved passenger information displays.
Future Expansion Alongside the introduction of these hybrid trains, the Dart+ project will expand electrification and modernise the rail network. However, plans for a new depot, essential for maintaining the fleet, are still under development, with a proposal expected by 2025.
The new hybrid trains promise to enhance Ireland’s rail system, offering greener and more efficient travel options for passengers.
