Anupam Kher’s Surprising Take on Renting Over Owning

Anupam Kher, with a net worth of Rs 405 crore, reveals why he prefers living in a rented apartment despite his immense success in the film industry

Anupam Kher, one of Bollywood’s most celebrated actors, has a unique perspective on homeownership. Despite having acted in over 500 films and having an estimated net worth of approximately Rs 405 crore, Kher continues to live in a rented apartment in Mumbai. This is a surprising choice in an industry where owning property is often seen as a symbol of success.

A Career Spanning Decades

Anupam Kher’s career spans over 40 years, during which he has delivered some unforgettable performances in both Bollywood and international films. His impressive body of work has earned him accolades, including five Filmfare Awards for Best Comedian and the prestigious Padma Shri in 2004 and Padma Bhushan in 2006, in recognition of his contribution to Indian cinema.

Why Rent? Anupam Kher’s Philosophy

In a recent interview with Curly Tales, Anupam Kher shared his thoughts on living in a rented apartment. He explained, “I live in a rental apartment because I didn’t want to own a home. Why should I do it, and for whom? It feels right to pay rent every month and just live. The money you would use to buy a house, you can keep in your bank and use it to pay the rent.” His philosophy of living in the moment and focusing on giving rather than accumulating wealth stands out in an industry that often equates success with material possessions.

Giving Back, Not Leaving Behind

Anupam Kher further elaborated on his belief that people should give to others while they are alive, rather than holding on to everything for the future. He shared that he had bought a house for his mother in Shimla, but this decision was more out of a playful comment to her, saying, “Your son is a big star.” He also revealed that his wife, Kirron Kher, initially found his decision to live in a rental space unusual, but over time, she accepted it. Kirron herself owns a home in Chandigarh.

Anupam Kher’s Wealth and Success

Despite his non-traditional approach to homeownership, Anupam Kher’s financial success is undeniable. With an annual income of approximately ₹30 crore, or ₹3 crore per month, Kher’s net worth is estimated to be around Rs 405 crore. His approach to money and success reflects his unique perspective on life, where experiences and relationships take precedence over material possessions.

Anupam Kher’s decision to live in a rented apartment, despite his immense success and wealth, offers a refreshing take on what it means to be successful in the entertainment industry. His choice reflects a deep understanding of the value of life beyond physical possessions, making him stand out as a true example of living life on one’s own terms.
