Vijay Sethupathi’s Maharaja has been nothing short of a sensation at the Indian box office. Made on a modest budget of Rs 25 crore, the film went on to gross approximately Rs 106 crore in India, nearly four times its production cost. With an engaging storyline and strong performances, Maharaja stood out among major releases in 2024, including Stree 2, Kalki 2898 AD, Animal, Devara, Kanguva, and Singham Again. The film also found significant success on OTT platforms, further boosting its reach and appreciation.

Now Targeting China’s Massive Market

After its success in India, Maharaja is set to make a bold debut in China on November 29, 2024. Scheduled for release on 40,000 screens, this film has the potential to earn an estimated Rs 700 crore in the Chinese market. China, known for having one of the largest and most lucrative film industries globally, has become a key destination for Indian films. Maharaja is poised to join the ranks of Indian films that have achieved major success in China, following in the footsteps of Dangal, which grossed Rs 1,300 crore.

The Global Appeal of Maharaja

The film’s universal themes and emotional depth have made it a standout, and its upcoming release in China has already generated significant buzz. Special promotions and events are planned across China to connect with audiences and highlight the cultural exchange between Indian and Chinese cinema. Alexi Woo from Yi Shi Films expressed excitement about sharing the film with Chinese viewers, emphasising the opportunity to showcase Tamil cinema to a new audience.

A Strong Financial Outlook

With its release on 40,000 screens, Maharaja could earn anywhere between $1,000 and $3,000 per screen in China. If the film averages $2,000 per screen, its total collection could reach approximately $80 million, which is around Rs 700 crore. This would mark a massive success, potentially making Maharaja one of the highest-grossing Indian films in China.

A Film with International Appeal

Directed by Nitilan Saminathan, Maharaja features a strong ensemble cast, including Vijay Sethupathi, Anurag Kashyap, Mamta Mohandas, and Nataraja Subramanian in key roles. The film’s ability to resonate with global audiences and its crossover appeal make it a milestone for Indian cinema in international markets.

As Maharaja prepares to release in China, the world will be watching to see how this film from a modest budget manages to break boundaries and achieve extraordinary success across continents.
