The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has announced plans to build a new high-speed expressway linking Bengaluru and Mangaluru. The project aims to slash travel time by 7 to 8 hours. In July 2024, the ministry initiated the search for a consulting firm, receiving nine bids by November 2024. The winning bidder is expected to be selected by early 2025, with 540 days allotted to prepare a comprehensive report. Construction is slated to begin by 2028.

Key Players: Karnataka PWD and NHAI

Spanning 335 kilometers, the expressway will be a joint effort between the Karnataka Public Works Department (PWD) and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). These agencies will handle tasks such as route alignment and land acquisition to ensure smooth execution of the project.

Boosting Connectivity and Business

The expressway, designed as a four- to six-lane corridor, will pass through Hassan, connecting Bengaluru with Mangaluru’s coastal hub. This modern infrastructure will ease traffic flow and significantly reduce congestion. By cutting travel time, it will make commuting more efficient and bolster Karnataka’s transport network. Additionally, it is expected to stimulate economic activity and simplify business operations between the two cities.

Challenges with the Current Highway

The existing Bengaluru-Mangaluru highway faces numerous hurdles, particularly during the monsoon season when landslides are frequent. Although parts of the road have six lanes, outdated infrastructure and poor conditions often cause delays, underscoring the need for the new expressway.
