Educators in the UAE are advocating for the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into school curricula, emphasising the need to prepare students for a rapidly changing digital landscape. According to a study by PowerSchool and YouGov, over 90% of educators in the UAE and Saudi Arabia believe AI and other advanced technologies are essential for improving learning outcomes.
Why Teaching AI is Crucial
Teachers underline the importance of introducing AI education from an early age. Louis La Grange, head of Science and ICT at Uptown International School, supports teaching AI, coding, and robotics based on age. “For younger students, tools like Scratch and Minecraft Education encourage critical thinking and creativity, while older students can delve into advanced AI applications, focusing on ethics and quality inputs,” he said.
Personalized Learning for Diverse Needs
The survey found that 90% of educators see personalised learning as key to addressing diverse student needs. Additionally, 79% advocate teaching AI early, while 88% highlight the need for ongoing professional development to keep pace with AI advancements.
La Grange noted that AI helps students, particularly those learning English as a second language, by enhancing critical thinking and language skills. “AI supported us when we had a surge of Chinese students, helping them navigate learning challenges,” he added.
Policy and Ethical Frameworks
Many schools are now drafting AI policies. “It’s crucial to guide students to use AI ethically and responsibly,” La Grange emphasised. He believes that while adults may be sceptical, students are curious and eager to embrace new technology. Schools must balance technological curiosity with ethical teaching.
AI’s Role in Automating Routine Tasks
AI not only enhances learning but also eases teachers’ workloads. According to the survey, 51% of educators highlighted AI’s ability to automate repetitive tasks, such as assigning homework and grading. Sangita Chima, Principal at Amity School Dubai, stated, “AI tools free up time for teachers, allowing them to focus on interactive and creative teaching methods.”
Preparing Students for an AI-Driven World
AI education equips students with essential skills like computational thinking and problem-solving. Chima emphasised that early exposure to AI concepts empowers students to adapt and excel in an AI-driven future. “Interactive tools and gamified platforms spark curiosity and prepare students for lifelong learning,” she said.
With AI poised to transform education, UAE schools are embracing this technology to enhance both teaching and learning experiences.
