A gold-coloured Rs 7 coin featuring cricketer MS Dhoni has been going viral on social media, with claims that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will issue it to honour Dhoni. However, Channeliam Fact Check has found that this claim is false.

The Truth Behind the Viral Image

The image of the Rs 7 coin was originally shared by a satirical page. The RBI has confirmed that the claim is untrue. The RBI does not mint coins, and there are no reports or press releases about a new ₹7 coin.

How the Claim Was Verified

  1. Official Sources Checked: A search of the RBI’s official website revealed no mention of a Rs 7 coin. The list of circulating and older coins did not include a ₹7 coin.
  2. Security Printing & Minting Corporation: The website of the Security Printing & Minting Corporation of India Limited (SPMCIL), responsible for minting coins, did not list any ₹7 coin.
  3. Commemorative Coins: The list of commemorative coins, issued for significant personalities or events, did not include a coin featuring MS Dhoni.
  4. RBI Confirmation: An RBI representative clarified that the RBI does not mint coins and called the claim “highly unlikely.”

Source of the Image

A reverse image search revealed that the picture originated from the Instagram account @thetathyanews, which posted the image on November 3. The caption stated that the image was satirical and intended for entertainment.

The viral claim about a Rs 7 coin featuring MS Dhoni is fake. There are no such coins issued by the RBI or any other official institution.
