The United States is widely regarded as one of the world’s most powerful nations, distinguished by its advanced technology and weapons manufacturing prowess. These strengths are central to its status as a global superpower. The U.S. has strategic relationships with over half the countries around the world, including India.
India’s growing defence and trade relationships with countries like the United States, Russia, France, Japan, and China highlight its rising importance on the global stage. India, as one of the world’s largest democracies, plays a significant role in global imports and exports, especially in the defence sector. In 2016, the U.S. officially recognized India as a Major Defense Partner, marking a significant milestone in their bilateral relations.
The $20 Billion Fighter Jet Deal
India is currently preparing to finalise a major defence deal for the procurement of 114 multi-role fighter aircraft for the Indian Air Force. This deal has attracted considerable global attention, particularly from superpowers like the U.S., Russia, and France. Though the procurement process has not yet begun, the outcome of this deal is eagerly anticipated by global players.
Key Competitors in the Race
Several countries are vying for the lucrative deal to supply India with 114 fighter jets. Russia leads the pack with its Su-35 and MiG-35 models, followed by France’s Rafale aircraft in second place. The U.S. has entered the race with its F-21 and F-18 jets, while Sweden’s Gripen and Europe’s Eurofighter Typhoon round out the competition.
The Indian Air Force recently hosted the “Tarang Shakti” military exercise, where almost all the contenders displayed their aircraft. The U.S. showcased its F-21 and F-18 fighter jets, signalling its strong interest in the deal. Given the close ties between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and U.S. President Donald Trump, it is expected that the Trump administration will push for a favourable outcome for American aircraft manufacturers.
