Skoda India has officially introduced the much-anticipated Kylaq compact SUV, starting at an ex-showroom price of Rs 7.89 lakh. Bookings for the SUV will open on December 2, with deliveries expected to begin from January 27, 2025. The Kylaq will make its public debut at the Bharat Mobility Show in January 2025.

Skoda’s Strategy to Tap into the Indian Market

The Kylaq marks Skoda’s smallest SUV yet, and the brand is eyeing this compact model to drive a significant boost in its Indian sales. The company aims to achieve annual sales of over 1,00,000 units with this model, leveraging the success of the Kushaq and Slavia, which contributed to a record 53,721 units sold in 2022.

A Unique Name with Meaningful Origins

The name “Kylaq” was selected through a pan-India contest with over 2,00,000 entries. It pays tribute to Mount Kailash, while the Sanskrit translation of “crystal” connects to the Czech Republic’s renowned crystal-making heritage. The name also aligns with Skoda’s SUV naming convention, following models like the Kushaq, Karoq, and Kodiaq.

Modern Design Language for the Kylaq

The Skoda Kylaq’s design follows the brand’s “Modern Solid” language, with clean lines and a striking front-end featuring split headlamps, an updated grille, and pronounced creases on the bonnet. While smaller than the Kushaq, the Kylaq offers a muscular, compact SUV look. Its profile shows an 85mm shorter wheelbase and 230mm reduction in length compared to the Kushaq, but it remains proportionate and substantial by compact SUV standards.

Comfortable Interiors with Modern Features

Inside, the Kylaq offers a familiar setup for those who have experienced the Kushaq, with shared features like the two-spoke steering wheel, 10-inch touchscreen, and 8-inch digital instrument cluster. It includes segment-standard features like a sunroof, wireless charging, and front seat ventilation, as well as more premium touches such as powered seat adjustment for both the driver and front passenger. The cabin is designed for comfort, with ample legroom, a cooled glovebox, and spacious storage options.

Practical Luggage Space

The Kylaq also excels in luggage space with a 446-litre boot capacity (360 litres with the parcel tray in place). The rear seats fold in a 60:40 split configuration for added storage flexibility, making the Kylaq a practical option for those needing space for larger luggage.

Safety Features and Build Quality

The Kylaq is built on the same MQB-A0 IN platform used for the Kushaq and other Volkswagen Group models, ensuring solid build quality. It is equipped with standard safety features like six airbags, ABS with EBD, and electronic stability control. Although the Kylaq does not yet have a crash test rating, Skoda is aiming for a 5-star score. Notably, it will not include advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) at launch.

Performance and Engine Options

Under the hood, the Kylaq is powered by a 1.0 TSI three-cylinder engine, delivering 115hp and 178Nm of torque. It is available with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. Skoda claims a 0-100km/h time of 10.5 seconds, making it one of the quicker options in the compact SUV segment. The Kylaq’s suspension has been tuned for a more absorbent ride, and it weighs 38kg less than the Kushaq.

Competitive Pricing and Rivals

The Kylaq’s price, starting at Rs 7.89 lakh, positions it as a strong contender in India’s competitive SUV market. Skoda aims to expand its reach with a wider sales and service network, targeting new cities and towns. The Kylaq will compete with established models like the Tata Nexon, Mahindra XUV 3OO, Maruti Brezza, Hyundai Venue, and Kia Sonet.

Skoda has created a compelling product in the Kylaq, which promises to make its mark on Indian roads and become a key player in the compact SUV segment.
