Doctors are growing increasingly concerned about the health of NASA astronaut Sunita Williams as her time in space continues to extend. Recent photos of Williams have raised alarms among medical experts, suggesting that her health may not be at its best.
Dr. Gupta, speaking to DailyMail.com, pointed out that Williams’ recent image could indicate that she is experiencing the stresses of living in space, even inside the pressurised cabin of the International Space Station (ISS). He remarked, “That image… suggests someone who is dealing with the natural stresses of being at a very high altitude for extended periods.”
This concern comes at a time when four astronauts, part of NASA’s Crew 8, were hospitalised after returning to Earth following a mission that lasted over 200 days. The crew, which arrived in Florida on October 25 aboard the SpaceX Dragon capsule, were initially treated for medical issues after landing. Although one astronaut needed immediate care, all members were taken to the hospital for observation after their return.
Dr. Gupta’s concerns about Sunita Williams’ health are particularly focused on her physical appearance. In a recent photo where Williams is seen making a pepperoni pizza, the doctor noticed her sunken cheeks and overall facial appearance. He speculated that these changes could be a result of weight loss, potentially caused by the extended demands of life in space. In zero-gravity conditions, astronauts burn more energy to stay warm, and exercise about 2.5 hours daily to prevent muscle and bone mass loss.
While Williams’ health may not be in immediate danger, Dr. Gupta emphasised that the astronaut’s sunken cheeks could be a sign of weight loss, which typically occurs when the body is not maintaining its usual weight.
Sunita Williams, who has been aboard the ISS since June 6, recently celebrated her birthday in space and even participated in the 2024 U.S. Presidential Election by casting her vote. However, the prolonged stay in space is clearly taking its toll, and experts are keeping a close watch on her well-being.
