As the festive season approaches, many people are rushing to return home for Diwali and Chhath puja. With this surge in demand, obtaining a confirmed train ticket can be challenging. To address this issue, the Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has launched the Vikalp Scheme, aimed at providing relief to passengers holding waitlisted tickets.
What is the Vikalp Scheme?
The Vikalp Scheme allows passengers who cannot secure a confirmed seat on their original train to opt for alternative trains on the same route without incurring any additional charges. This initiative significantly increases the chances of obtaining confirmed seats, making holiday travel smoother for many.
How Does the Scheme Work?
When booking a ticket, passengers can choose the Vikalp option. If they are waitlisted, their ticket may be transferred to another train scheduled to depart within 12 hours of the original train. If a seat becomes available on the alternate train, the ticket will be automatically confirmed. However, once a ticket is reallocated, passengers must travel on the new train and cannot revert to their original choice.
Important Considerations
While the Vikalp Scheme enhances the likelihood of securing a seat, it does not guarantee confirmation, as it depends on seat availability on alternate trains. Passengers are encouraged to check their PNR status closer to their journey date to confirm their seat assignment. Standard cancellation charges will apply if the newly confirmed ticket is cancelled.
How to Book Tickets Under the Vikalp Scheme
To utilize the Vikalp Scheme, follow these steps:
- Log in to the IRCTC website or app.
- Enter your travel details and proceed to payment.
- Select the Vikalp option.
- Choose from the available alternate trains listed.
- Check your PNR status after the chart is prepared to confirm your seat.
With the Vikalp Scheme in place, passengers can enjoy a more flexible and hassle-free travel experience this Diwali.
