Somerville College, part of the University of Oxford, has launched the Dr. Gita Piramal Scholarship in partnership with the Oxford India Centre for Sustainable Development (OICSD) and the Piramal family. This scholarship covers full tuition and living expenses for Indian students pursuing higher studies at Oxford. Eligibility and application details are available on the official website.
Honouring Dr. Gita Piramal’s Legacy
The scholarship is named after Dr. Gita Piramal, a renowned Indian business historian, in recognition of her contributions to academia and corporate leadership. Dr. Piramal has been a Senior Associate Fellow at Somerville College, mentoring students and shaping global business perspectives through her research and publications.
Supporting Economically Disadvantaged Students
Aimed at exceptional Indian students from disadvantaged backgrounds, the scholarship will run for five years. It seeks to enhance India’s intellectual resources and promote sustainable development.
Empowering Future Leaders
Dr. Piramal expressed her excitement, noting how the scholarship will help young Indian talent thrive in Oxford’s academic environment and contribute to India’s progress. Somerville College Principal Jan Royall emphasised the honour of linking Dr. Piramal’s name with empowering exceptional Indian students to access a world-class education and make meaningful contributions to India.
Strengthening India’s Future
Since 2013, the OICSD has supported over 60 Indian students, many of whom have returned to address key issues in healthcare, technology, and climate change. The new scholarship reinforces this mission, giving underprivileged students the opportunity to contribute to global and national solutions.
