Foxconn to Launch iPhone 16 Production in India

Foxconn prepares to start manufacturing the iPhone 16 Pro series in Tamil Nadu, aligning with Apple’s strategy to expand production in India

Apple’s supplier, Foxconn, is preparing to launch production of the iPhone 16 Pro series at its facility in Tamil Nadu, marking a significant step in Apple’s strategy to shift production from China to India.

Investment in State-of-the-Art Equipment

Foxconn recently acquired machinery worth approximately $31 million for its Indian facility, as confirmed by an exchange filing. The new equipment was purchased through Foxconn’s Indian subsidiary, Foxconn Hon Hai Technology India Mega Development Private Limited, in partnership with Apple Operations Limited.

India-Made iPhone 16 Pro Expected Soon

Apple announced it will soon introduce the first “Made in India” iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max models. These Indian-made devices are expected to hit the market between late October and early November, aligning with Apple’s broader production diversification.

Expansion Plans in Tamil Nadu

In addition to its iPhone production facility, Foxconn is considering a $1 billion investment to set up a smartphone display module assembly plant in Tamil Nadu. In August, Foxconn Singapore further strengthened its India operations by purchasing over 1.2 billion ordinary shares from its Indian subsidiary, injecting around $144 million into Foxconn’s Indian unit.

State Support and Incentives for Foxconn

Foxconn has garnered significant support from multiple South Indian state governments, with various states offering incentives and land parcels for Foxconn’s potential expansions.

Foxconn’s Ongoing Investments in India

Foxconn’s chairman, Young Liu, has highlighted the company’s extensive investments in India, totaling approximately $10 billion to date. Foxconn has been consolidating its manufacturing capabilities in India, marking the country as a vital hub for its operations.

Addressing Hiring Practice Concerns

Despite these advancements, Foxconn recently faced criticism over alleged discriminatory hiring practices at its Indian iPhone assembly plant. A report claimed the company excluded married women from job opportunities, which led the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to investigate. Both central and state labor authorities are now reviewing these practices.

Growing Electronics Manufacturing Landscape in India

Foxconn is part of a broader movement of electronics companies expanding in India. Other major players, including Wistron, Tata Electronics, and Kaynes Technology, have increased their production footprints, contributing to India’s rising status as a manufacturing hub for global electronics.
