Concerns about hygiene on Indian Railways have been highlighted in a recent report, raising alarm over the infrequent cleaning of wool blankets used by millions of passengers daily. With only monthly washing schedules in place, the potential for spreading allergens and pathogens poses significant health risks, particularly for vulnerable individuals.
Infrequent Cleaning Practices
According to an RTI response cited by The New Indian Express, while the linen provided to passengers is washed after each use, wool blankets are only cleaned “at least once a month, preferably twice in a month, subject to available capacity and logistics arrangements.” Housekeeping staff confirm that blankets are washed only if they are visibly dirty or emit odours. This raises serious concerns, as unclean blankets can act as breeding grounds for pathogens.
Health Risks of Unclean Blankets
Unwashed woollen blankets can harbour a variety of allergens and irritants. Wool fibres can trap dust mites and mold, creating an environment conducive to allergies. The report notes that using a dirty blanket can release these particles into the air, potentially triggering allergic reactions such as sneezing, nasal congestion, itchy eyes, and skin rashes. For individuals with asthma or respiratory conditions, this can lead to aggravated symptoms and breathing difficulties.
Moreover, unclean wool can irritate sensitive skin. Those with pre-existing skin conditions, like eczema, may find that their symptoms worsen when exposed to contaminated fabrics. This can lead to increased discomfort and a need for more intensive skincare.
Unclean blankets are also susceptible to bacteria and fungi. Over time, sweat, body oils, and food particles accumulate, creating a breeding ground for harmful microorganisms. This can result in skin infections and exacerbate respiratory issues, leading to a range of health problems, including headaches and fatigue. Individuals with weakened immune systems, such as the elderly and those with chronic illnesses, are particularly at risk.
Best Practices for Safe Travel
In light of these concerns, passengers are advised to use the double sheets provided or bring their own blankets. One user on Reddit noted, “It is not possible to wash woollen blankets after every run. If it’s done, it will be expensive. Double sheets are provided, which are washed after every run, just use a sheet and then the blanket above it.” Another user mentioned, “You are not supposed to use the blanket directly anyway. Use one of the white linen sheets to cover the bunk, then cover yourself with another white sheet and then put on the blanket. I thought it was common knowledge.” This indicates a shared understanding among travellers about the importance of hygiene.
The need for regular blanket cleaning on Indian Railways is critical for ensuring the health and safety of passengers. As highlighted in the report, greater awareness and adherence to hygiene practices can help mitigate the risks associated with unwashed wool blankets.
