Indian Railways Cuts Ticket Booking to 60 Day

Railway Board Reduces Advance Ticket Booking Period from 120 to 60 Days Starting November 1, 2024, Aiming to Simplify Travel Planning and Reduce Cancellations

In a significant policy change, the Railway Board has announced a reduction in the advance ticket booking limit. Starting November 1, 2024, passengers will only be able to book train tickets 60 days (two months) in advance, instead of the previous 120 days (four months). This change is aimed at simplifying the booking process and better catering to passenger needs.

What Stays the Same for Existing Bookings

All bookings made before October 31, 2024, will continue to follow the previous 120-day limit, ensuring no disruption for passengers who booked under the old system.

Special Privilege for Foreign Tourists

Despite the policy shift, foreign tourists will retain the option to book tickets up to 365 days in advance, allowing them to plan their trips well ahead of time.

Rationale Behind the Change

Saraswati Chandra, the Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of Eastern Central Railway (ECR), explained that the decision was made to address the increasing number of ticket cancellations seen during the four-month booking period. “By reducing the advance booking window to 60 days, passengers can plan their trips more effectively, minimizing mass cancellations,” she noted.

Public Reactions

Ravi Prakash, a resident of Patna, welcomed the move, stating that under the old system, passengers’ money would often be locked up for months, and cancellations came with deductions. The 60-day booking period, he believes, will benefit passengers by reducing such issues.

Additional Changes to Booking Rules

While the advance reservation period has been shortened, other rules, such as Tatkal booking, will remain unchanged. This decision is expected to give passengers more flexibility and reduce the number of vacant seats.
