Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu, reaffirming India’s commitment as a “close friend” under the ‘neighbourhood first’ policy. Modi highlighted India’s role in providing essential aid, including Covid vaccines, to the Maldives during emergencies. India’s support extended to projects such as airports, housing, and a drinking water initiative benefiting 30,000 people across 28 islands.
Maldives’ Role in Indian Ocean Security
Modi emphasised the Maldives’ significance in maintaining security in the Indian Ocean Region. Concerns were raised regarding Muizzu’s prior electoral campaign that highlighted an ‘India Out’ sentiment. However, Muizzu assured India that his government values cross-country cooperation, particularly in defence and regional stability, and would not jeopardise India’s security.
Expanding Bilateral Cooperation
The leaders discussed enhancing cooperation in tourism, infrastructure, and trade. President Muizzu reiterated the importance of Indian tourists for the Maldivian economy and expressed hope for a free trade agreement to boost investments. Modi mentioned India’s ongoing contributions, including road construction and drinking water systems, and the opening of new consulates in Addu and Bengaluru to further strengthen ties.
Financial Aid and Future Prospects
India’s financial aid to the Maldives remains crucial, with Rs 30 billion in support and a $400 million currency swap agreement to ease foreign exchange challenges. Muizzu expressed gratitude for India’s assistance and reaffirmed Maldives’ commitment to maintaining strong socio-economic and infrastructure cooperation with India.
