Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu is set to visit India from October 6 to 10. This will be his first bilateral visit to the country as president. His presidency, known for its pro-China stance, has led to strained relations with India. Shortly after taking office, Muizzu demanded the withdrawal of Indian military personnel stationed at three aviation platforms in the Maldives. These personnel were later replaced by civilians.
Relations between India and the Maldives hit a rough patch when Muizzu, within hours of assuming office, requested Indian troops’ withdrawal. Despite the tension, Maldives’ Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer later acknowledged that misunderstandings have been resolved, following the repatriation of the Indian military personnel.
Efforts to Mend Ties
Zameer stated that while initial relations were strained, the Maldives now has good ties with both China and India. Both countries continue to support the Maldives despite earlier friction.
Controversial Remarks by Maldivian Ministers
Compounding the issue, three Maldivian deputy ministers made controversial statements on social media about India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Maldives Foreign Ministry quickly distanced itself from these comments, leading to the suspension of the ministers involved.
Previous State Visits
Unlike past presidents, who made their first official visits to India, Muizzu chose Turkeye and China as his first stops. His upcoming trip marks an attempt to strengthen diplomatic relations between India and the Maldives.
