India is home to a rich history of entrepreneurship, with businesses that have not only survived but thrived for centuries. Here’s a look at five of the oldest companies in India that continue to operate successfully today.

1. Wadia Group (Established in 1736)

Founded by Lovji Nusserwanjee Wadia, the Wadia Group is India’s oldest conglomerate. The group began by building ships and docks for the British East India Company. Over the years, it expanded into various industries, including textiles with Bombay Dyeing, aviation, and healthcare. The group remains influential, with significant contributions to India’s industrial landscape.

2. EID-Parry Ltd (Established in 1788)

EID-Parry Ltd was established by Thomas Parry as Parry & Co, primarily trading in sugar and spirits. The company became a leader in sugar production and also pioneered fertilizer manufacturing in India. Today, EID-Parry is a major player in the sugar industry and operates in other sectors like biofertilizers and nutraceuticals.

3. State Bank of India (Established in 1806)

Originally founded as the Bank of Calcutta, the State Bank of India (SBI) is the oldest and one of the largest banks in India. It was initially set up to fund British wars against local rulers but has since grown into a banking giant, with a massive presence across India and around the world.

4. RPG Group (Established in 1820)

The RPG Group traces its origins back to 1820 when it was founded by Ramdutt Goenka. The group expanded significantly under the leadership of Keshav Prasad Goenka and today includes flagship companies like CEAT Tyres and RPG Life Sciences. The conglomerate operates in diverse industries such as infrastructure, technology, and energy.

5. Aditya Birla Group (Established in 1857)

The Aditya Birla Group was founded by Shiv Narayan Birla, but it was Ghanshyamdas Birla who transformed the company into a global powerhouse. Initially focused on jute trading, the group expanded into textiles, finance, cement, and telecommunications. Today, the Aditya Birla Group is one of India’s largest and most influential conglomerates.

These companies not only represent India’s industrial past but continue to shape its future, demonstrating the enduring spirit of Indian entrepreneurship.
