Microsoft Corp. and G42 have announced the creation of two new centres in Abu Dhabi as part of their ongoing partnership. These centres are aimed at advancing their joint goals for Responsible AI.
Centre for Responsible AI Practices
The first centre, established with the endorsement of the UAE’s Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Technology Council (AIATC), will focus on developing best practices and industry standards for the ethical use of AI in the Middle East and the Global South. This centre will bring together academic researchers and AI practitioners from the private sector to share and refine emerging Responsible AI practices.
Expansion of Microsoft’s AI for Good Lab
The second centre marks the expansion of Microsoft’s AI for Good Research Lab into Abu Dhabi. This lab will work on AI projects addressing significant societal challenges. It will collaborate with nonprofit organisations to tackle issues such as food security and climate resilience, using AI to analyse high-resolution geospatial data and improve disaster preparedness.
Collaboration and Impact
Both centres will collaborate closely with the AIATC to enhance Abu Dhabi’s status as a leading hub for artificial intelligence and advanced technology. The initiative aims to bridge the global language divide by developing large language models for underrepresented languages and addressing key economic and societal issues across the region.
Commitment to Responsible AI
Microsoft and G42 are dedicated to implementing Responsible AI standards, including safety measures, digital safety plans, and robust “red teaming” processes to protect AI systems from attacks. This commitment ensures that their AI technologies, deployed on Azure, are used responsibly and shared securely with a growing global customer base.
Statements from Leaders
Brad Smith, Vice Chair and President of Microsoft, emphasised the importance of these centres in broadening access to safe and secure AI. Peng Xiao, Group CEO of G42, highlighted the centres’ role in positioning Abu Dhabi as a global AI innovation hub with a focus on safety and collaboration.
