The Jan Shatabdi trains, a favourite among passengers in Kerala for many years, are receiving a major upgrade. Two Jan Shatabdi trains currently operate on the Thiruvananthapuram-Kozhikode and Kannur-Thiruvananthapuram routes. As an Onam gift to the people of Kerala, the coaches of the Kannur-Thiruvananthapuram Janasatabdi are being upgraded to Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches, known for their advanced safety and comfort.
Introduction of LHB Coaches
The LHB coaches, developed with German technology, are made of stainless steel and offer a smoother and safer travel experience. The upgraded service on the Thiruvananthapuram-Kannur route will start on September 29 from Thiruvananthapuram, with the return service from Kannur beginning on September 30. Passengers have long complained about the poor condition of the previous coaches, and railway authorities have addressed these concerns by upgrading them with the new LHB coaches.
Centennial Upgrade for Kannur-Thiruvananthapuram Route
The conversion to LHB coaches is happening as the Kannur-Thiruvananthapuram Jan Shatabdi train celebrates its centenary year. Despite a push to make this service a daily one, the request was not accepted by railway officials. However, passengers can still look forward to improved comfort with the new coaches.
Future Plans for Kerala’s Railways
The Thiruvananthapuram-Kozhikode Jan Shatabdi train is also expected to switch to LHB coaches by the next financial year. In addition, discussions are underway to replace the coaches of the Ernakulam-Bengaluru intercity train. There is also growing demand for new coaches on popular Kerala trains like Malabar, Maveli, and Parasuram.
These changes reflect the railway’s efforts to enhance the passenger experience and ensure safer travel for those using Kerala’s busy train routes.
