Bengaluru Hosts Vibrant Job Fair for Seniors

St. Joseph’s University in Bengaluru had become a hub of activity as it hosted the Nightingales Job 60+ fair. This event, organised in collaboration with Rotary Bangalore West, highlighted a growing trend among India’s senior population: a desire to remain active, purposeful, and financially independent well beyond traditional retirement ages.

A Flourishing Spirit

The fair saw over 500 senior participants, many in their seventies, eager to rejoin the workforce. Retired teacher A.S. Taj, who attended with her husband, expressed the event’s sentiment perfectly: “I have the desire to breathe my last breath while working.” This spirit was shared by many attendees, who came to explore new opportunities and contribute their extensive skills and experience.

Diverse Opportunities

The job fair featured more than 30 companies across various sectors, including engineering, administration, education, and retail. On-the-spot interviews were conducted, and numerous seniors left with job offers. Derek Hamilton, a 72-year-old retiree from Sarjapur with 51 years of experience in education, voiced his enthusiasm: “I still feel I have the energy and can contribute. I want to be with children, teachers, and parents rather than staying home.”

“Job 60 Plus” Initiative

The fair is part of Nightingales Medical Trust’s “Job 60 Plus” initiative, which has been assisting financially insecure elders in finding employment for over a decade. This program aims to address the challenges faced by many seniors in India, such as rising living costs and lack of pensions. S. Premkumar Raja, co-founder and honorary secretary of the trust, highlighted the program’s importance: “Through ‘Job 60 Plus,’ we help elders maintain a life of dignity.”

Lifeline for Many

For some, the job fair was more than just a job search; it was a vital step towards financial independence. 68-year-old Nagalambike H., who lives separately from her family, shared her need for employment to support herself. Similarly, Joyce Shakti, who recently retired at 60, sought a new purpose. She explained, “Retirement is not the end of the road. I want to keep myself engaged and healthy, and believe that staying active is crucial, especially for women after 60.”

The Nightingales Job 60+ fair not only provided employment opportunities but also reinforced the notion that age is not a barrier to continued professional engagement and personal fulfilment.
