Arun Ghosh, a 38-year-old Indian national residing in Welland, Ontario, has achieved an impressive milestone by driving 1 million kilometres in his 2014 Honda Accord. Known for his deep passion for cars, Ghosh reached this rare achievement, but his odometer stopped at 999,999 kilometres. Ghosh has now approached Honda with a request for a customised, seven-digit odometer to continue tracking his remarkable journey.
From Kerala to Ontario: A Journey of Passion
Originally from Cherthala, Kerala, Ghosh moved to Welland, Ontario, in 2017 to study at Niagara College. It was during this time that he purchased his “dream car,” a Honda Accord that had already clocked 90,000 kilometres. Motivated by a friend’s challenge to reach 1 million kilometres after his car surpassed 500,000 kilometres, Ghosh embraced the challenge with enthusiasm.
The Milestone and the Frozen Odometer
On July 30, 2024, with friends cheering him on, Ghosh was just 100 kilometres away from his goal. The celebratory drive took him near the Peace Bridge at the US border. However, upon reaching the milestone, the odometer did not display the expected seven-digit figure but rather froze at 999,999 kilometres. Ghosh was initially puzzled and reached out to Honda for a customised odometer to record his accomplishment.
Driving Passion and Dedication
For Ghosh, driving is more than a necessity; it’s a passion. He prefers driving around Niagara-on-the-Lake over walking and is well-known in the international student community for offering rides for the cost of gas. Despite suggestions to switch to a more fuel-efficient vehicle, Ghosh remains devoted to his Accord, which he describes as “like floating on the road.”
Car Maintenance and Longevity
Ghosh’s dedication to maintaining his vehicle is evident in his strict maintenance routine. He exclusively uses Honda parts, specific brands of filters, and engine oil. While the car’s transmission remains original, it has undergone an engine replacement, showcasing Ghosh’s commitment to preserving its performance.
Industry Reactions and Acknowledgments
Shamil Becharbhai, director of a Honda dealership in St. Catharines, Ontario, expressed amazement at the car’s mileage, noting it as the highest he has encountered in his 20 years in the business. Honda Canada spokesperson Ken Chiu also recognized the rarity of Ghosh’s achievement, describing it as “worth celebrating” despite its infrequency.
