Eric Schmidt, the former CEO of Google, has launched a new startup named White Stork, aiming to assist Ukraine with advanced AI-driven attack drones. Schmidt, who expressed frustration over the destruction caused by tanks in Ukrainian cities, revealed his motivations during a recent lecture at Stanford University.
White Stork’s Mission and Technology
White Stork focuses on developing sophisticated drones that leverage artificial intelligence to identify and target enemies. The goal is to produce these drones at scale and reduce the reliance on traditional ground battles with tanks and artillery. Schmidt has emphasised that the drones, supported by government partnerships, will be deployed directly to support Ukraine’s defence efforts.
Schmidt’s Unique Role and Advice
Schmidt humorously described himself as a “licensed arms dealer” due to his new role but advised against this career path, recommending instead to stick with AI. His experience in artificial intelligence and his previous role as chair of the National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence underscore his commitment to integrating AI in complex, high-impact areas.
Previous Experience and Future Plans
Before founding White Stork, Schmidt was CEO of Google from 2001 to 2011 and led the National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence. His new venture aims to use AI in innovative ways to support modern warfare and improve defence strategies.
