Launched on March 1, 2024, the Life Protection Plan (LPP) is a new insurance scheme designed to provide compensation of up to Dh75,000 for families of Indian workers in the UAE in the event of the employee’s death, whether from natural causes or accidents.
Coverage and Repatriation
The LPP covers death from any cause and includes protection for permanent total or partial disability due to accidents. It also offers repatriation expenses up to Dh12,000 per person. This plan is available for workers aged 18 to 70 years with a UAE employment visa.
Benefits and Cost
The insurance scheme offers three coverage options:
Dh72 per year for Dh75,000 compensation
Dh50 per year for Dh50,000 compensation
Dh37 per year for Dh35,000 compensation
Subscription and Implementation
More than 5,500 workers have already subscribed to this welfare scheme, according to the Indian Consulate in Dubai. The plan must be opted for by employers or companies and is not available for individual subscription at this time. The Indian Consulate facilitated the scheme’s rollout through meetings with major UAE companies and insurance providers, Extra Co Group of Companies and Gargash Insurance.
Context and Statistics
With around 3.5 million Indians residing in the UAE, about 65 percent are employed in blue-collar jobs. The Indian Consulate reported 1,750 deaths in Dubai in 2022, with 1,100 being workers. In 2023, 1,000 worker deaths were recorded out of 1,513 total deaths, with over 90 percent attributed to natural causes.
Purpose of the Scheme
The plan aims to fill a gap in employment benefits for the 2.27 million blue-collar workers in the UAE. While companies often provide health insurance and compensation for work-related incidents, natural deaths were not previously covered.
