Harmanpreet Singh stands out as one of India’s wealthiest hockey players, earning his substantial income from his impressive international hockey career and involvement in the Hockey India League. In the 2015 season, Singh was signed by Dabang Mumbai for $51,000 (around Rs 42 lakh), marking a significant milestone in his career.

Major Achievements

As captain of the Indian hockey team, Harmanpreet Singh led his squad to a historic victory at the 2024 Paris Olympics, defeating Australia 3-2 in their final Group B match. This win was significant, as it was India’s first Olympic victory over Australia in hockey since 1972. During the match, Singh played a crucial role by scoring from a penalty corner and converting a penalty stroke, contributing to the team’s triumphant performance.

Career Milestones

Singh, known for his outstanding drag flick skills, is currently leading the Indian field hockey team in his third Olympic appearance. Since making his senior debut in 2015 against Japan, Singh has participated in the 2016 Rio Olympics, helped India win a bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, secured a silver at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, and clinched gold at the 2022 Asian Games.

Income Streams

Harmanpreet Singh’s earnings primarily come from his hockey career and participation in the Hockey India League. His notable performance in the 2015 league season, where he was acquired by Dabang Mumbai for $51,000, was a key highlight. Singh’s impactful play, which included scoring five goals, earned him the 2015 Ponty Chadha Award as the ‘most promising player’ of the tournament.

Indian hockey players, unlike athletes in some other sports, do not have central contracts. They earn through their respective teams and organisations. Additionally, prize money is awarded for accomplishments in major tournaments. For instance, each player from the Indian hockey team who won bronze at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics received Rs 15 lakh from the Petroleum Sports Promotion Board, along with other honours.
