Rajesh Dongre, a 48-year-old entrepreneur, has turned his early life struggles into a remarkable success story. Forced to leave school after seventh grade due to financial hardships, Rajesh, known as Raju, is now the proud owner of Mahalakshmi Griha Udyog, a flourishing business in Solapur that employs 6,000 women.

Nearly 400 kilometers from Mumbai, Solapur is home to Rajesh’s thriving papad (pappadum) manufacturing venture. Born into a family that faced economic adversity, Rajesh’s parents worked at a local mill. The mill’s closure plunged the family into further financial difficulties, compelling him to abandon his education and seek work to support his family.

In the face of these challenges, Rajesh’s mother began making papads to make ends meet. Inspired by her efforts, Rajesh founded Mahalakshmi Papad in 2013 with just four women workers. His vision was to create a sustainable business that would not only support his family but also empower other women in the community.

Today, Mahalakshmi Griha Udyog boasts 11 manufacturing units across Solapur, where women are trained to produce high-quality papads. These products are sold to prestigious hotels in Mumbai and distributed across various states, earning the business a reputation for excellence. By providing employment to thousands of women, he has not only transformed his own life but also uplifted the lives of many in his community.
