Preeti Sudan, a retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the 1983 batch from the Andhra Pradesh cadre, has recently been appointed as the Chairman of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). This significant move follows the resignation of Manoj Soni, who stepped down due to personal reasons. Sudan’s appointment comes at a time of ongoing controversy, including issues involving probationary IAS officer Pooja Khedekar.

Early Life and Education

Born on April 30, 1960, Preeti Sudan’s early years laid a solid foundation for her distinguished career in public service. She pursued higher education with a focus on Economics and Social Policy and Planning at the London School of Economics. Additionally, she gained specialised training in public finance management from Washington, further refining her expertise in managing public resources.

Career Highlights

Preeti Sudan’s career spans nearly four decades, with significant roles in both central and state governments. Her notable positions include:

  • Health Secretary of India (October 2017 – July 2020): Sudan played a critical role in managing the response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Secretary of the Department of Food and Public Distribution: She contributed to crucial food distribution policies.
  • Joint Secretary, Ministry of Defense: She handled important defence matters.
  • Consultant, World Bank: She provided valuable insights into global health and economic issues.
  • Independent Panel for Pandemic Preparedness and Response (IPPR): Sudan reviewed the global response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

She was instrumental in planning and implementing the Ayushman Bharat Yojana, a major health initiative aimed at providing free health coverage to India’s vulnerable populations.

Role as UPSC Chairperson

Preeti Sudan officially took over as the Chairperson of the UPSC on August 1, 2024, succeeding Manoj Soni. Her extensive background in public administration and health management positions her well to oversee the UPSC’s operations. Her appointment is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the commission, which is currently addressing challenges related to alleged record falsification by probationary IAS officer Pooja Khedekar.

Contributions Beyond Government

In addition to her government roles, Preeti Sudan has been actively involved in global and national health initiatives. She has served on the Board of the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn & Child Health (PMNCH), contributing to efforts aimed at improving maternal and child health worldwide.

Preeti Sudan’s transition to the role of UPSC Chairperson marks a notable advancement in her distinguished career. With her extensive experience in public administration and health management, she is poised to make significant contributions to the UPSC. As the new chairperson, Sudan’s leadership will be closely watched amid ongoing challenges within the commission.
