In a bid to enhance environmental sustainability, Sikkim’s government has introduced a new regulation requiring all tourist vehicles entering the state to carry a large garbage bag. This directive from the Tourism and Civil Aviation Department is designed to encourage everyone to help keep Sikkim’s natural beauty intact.

Responsibilities for Tour Operators and Drivers

Tour operators, travel agencies, and vehicle drivers are now responsible for ensuring that their vehicles have garbage bags. They must inform travellers about the importance of using these bags for proper waste disposal.

Random Checks and Penalties

To enforce this rule, authorities will conduct random checks on tourist vehicles. Vehicles without a garbage bag will be subject to fines.

Sikkim’s Tourism and Environmental Challenges

Sikkim, India’s least populated state with over 600,000 residents, welcomes more than 2 million visitors each year. Known for its stunning landscapes and rich cultural heritage, Sikkim attracts tourists with its snow-capped mountains, lush valleys, serene lakes, and unique cultural experiences. However, the high number of visitors creates challenges with waste management and environmental sustainability.

Awareness Campaigns and Previous Initiatives

To address these challenges, the government has launched awareness campaigns on cleanliness and waste management. These efforts are aimed at educating both tourists and locals about maintaining a clean environment.

Sikkim has been a leader in environmental efforts, with past programs including plastic bag bans and promoting organic farming.

Setting a Precedent for Sustainable Tourism

Officials believe that the new garbage bag mandate will help reduce littering and waste buildup in tourist areas. By involving the tourism sector, Sikkim aims to set an example for other states in India and around the world. This initiative marks a significant step towards sustainable tourism.
