Microsoft Introduces Spellcheck and Autocorrect to Notepad in Windows 11 After 40 Years

After 40 years since its debut in Windows 1.0 in 1983, Microsoft’s Notepad app has received significant enhancements with the addition of spellcheck and autocorrect features in Windows 11. This long-overdue update brings familiar functionality seen in Word and Microsoft Edge, now integrated seamlessly into the simplistic text editor.

Implementation and User Control

Reports indicate that Microsoft quietly started rolling out these features following testing that began in March. The spell check feature operates similarly to other Microsoft applications, marking misspelt words with a red underline for easy identification. Users have the flexibility to enable or disable spellcheck on a file-by-file basis within the Notepad app for Windows 11, enhancing customization and user control.

Evolving Features of Notepad

In addition to spellcheck and autocorrect, Microsoft has been steadily enhancing Notepad for Windows 11. Recent updates include character counting, dark mode, tab support, Copilot integration for enhanced productivity, and even a virtual fidget spinner for a touch of nostalgia.

Recent Enhancements

Late last year, Microsoft introduced a character count feature, displaying counts at the bottom similar to Microsoft Word. The app now also includes an autosave feature, eliminating the need for manual saves and enhancing user convenience.

Microsoft’s ongoing updates to Notepad underscore its commitment to improving functionality and user experience across its software ecosystem. As Windows 11 continues to evolve, these enhancements ensure that Notepad remains a reliable tool for users seeking both simplicity and productivity in their everyday tasks.
