Kollywood industry, in 2024 has witnessed its first 100 crore grosser with Vijay Sethupathi’s Maharaja making history at the worldwide box office. The achievement is particularly noteworthy as it took the industry six months to reach this global century, highlighting the impact of smaller releases in the absence of big stars. Maharaja’s rapid success is evident as it accomplished this feat in just 15 days, setting a new benchmark.
Over the past years, the Tamil film industry has experienced substantial growth in box office business, with stalwarts like Rajinikanth, Thalapathy Vijay, and Ajith Kumar leading the positive trend. However, this year has seen a dearth of major releases, allowing films like Vijay Sethupathi’s Maharaja to shine and contribute to the industry’s success.
Despite facing competition from Kalki 2898 AD, Maharaja’s domestic collections dipped below the 1 crore mark for the first time on the third Friday. Nevertheless, the film has amassed an estimated total of 63.50 crores net at the Indian box office, with gross domestic collections reaching 74.93 crores including taxes.
Internationally, Maharaja has performed well, grossing 25.10 crores overseas. The film’s combined Indian and overseas gross has propelled its worldwide box office collection to an impressive 100.03 crores within just 15 days, solidifying its position as Kollywood’s first 100 crore global grosser in 2024, surpassing Aranmanai 4’s 99.53 crores gross.
Produced on a controlled budget of 20 crores, Vijay Sethupathi’s Maharaja has emerged as a massive success story. With domestic box office returns of 43.50 crores (after deducting the budget), the film has achieved an outstanding 217.50% return on investment, further cementing its triumph in the industry.
