The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has unveiled an innovative MBA program in Digital Maritime and Supply Chain, touted as the first of its kind globally. This 24-month program is tailored for working professionals and is set to commence in September 2024.
Program Launch and Overview
The launch event, held on June 28 at the IIT Madras campus, was attended by industry experts, faculty members, and students. The MBA program is a collaborative effort between the Departments of Management Studies and Ocean Engineering at IIT Madras, with significant input from industry partner i-maritime Consultancy.
Program Objectives and Curriculum
The new MBA aims to arm professionals with the skills to navigate the rapidly evolving landscape of digital technologies in maritime trade and supply chain management. According to Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, the program is designed to enhance the expertise of professionals and entrepreneurs in managing the complexities of these sectors.
“Our goal is to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of how digital technologies can optimize operations and drive strategic growth,” Prof. Kamakoti stated.
Prof. K. Murali, Chairperson of the MBA (Digital Maritime and Supply Chain) Program and Dean (Faculty) at IIT Madras, emphasized the program’s flexible structure, which blends on-campus collaboration with live online classes. This setup is particularly suited for working professionals.
Prof. M. Thenmozhi, Head of the Department of Management Studies at IIT Madras, highlighted the significant challenges posed by the integration of digital technologies into maritime and supply chain industries, such as cybersecurity, data analytics, and blockchain implementation. “The IIT Madras MBA in Digital Maritime & Supply Chain is structured to address these challenges head-on, providing professionals with the knowledge and tools needed to mitigate risks and leverage opportunities in this dynamic landscape,” Prof. Thenmozhi noted.
Program Features
The curriculum is designed to offer a deep dive into cutting-edge digital technologies, including the Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), and Blockchain. The program spans two years but can be extended to four years, encompassing 900 hours of classroom sessions and project work, totaling 192 credits.
Participants will benefit from a blend of online and on-campus learning, including six on-campus immersion modules. They will also have access to IIT Madras’ extensive learning resources, including the Digital Maritime Library.
Graduates of the program will gain IIT Madras alumni status, lifetime access to learning resources, and enhanced career support, including global job opportunities and access to the IIT Madras Incubation and Start-up Platform. The program also offers international networking opportunities and innovative pedagogy focused on digital technologies.
Eligibility and Admission
Candidates with a bachelor’s degree, at least 60% marks, and a minimum of two years of full-time work experience are eligible to apply. The admission process includes an online IIT Madras Admission Test followed by personal interviews for shortlisted candidates. Applications are now open for the first batch starting in September 2024.
Fees and Scholarships
The program fee is set at INR 9,00,000, payable in instalments. Scholarships covering up to 50% of the course fee are available, and the program is eligible for bank loans.
