The Saudi Ministry of Education has recently sanctioned a comprehensive academic calendar that will govern public education, higher education, and technical and vocational training across the kingdom for the next five years. This decision, reported by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), marks a significant overhaul aimed at enhancing the educational structure in Saudi Arabia.
Three-Term System Introduced
Commencing from the academic year 2024-25, Saudi public schools will adopt a structured three-term system. Each academic year will consist of three distinct terms, with specific start and end dates designed to optimize learning outcomes. The calendar includes an eight-week summer vacation starting in August, allowing students and educators adequate time for rejuvenation and academic preparation.
Term Dates: The first term is scheduled to commence on August 18, 2024, followed by the second term on November 17, 2024, and concluding with the third term starting on March 2, 2025, and ending on June 26 of the same year.
Holidays and Breaks
Throughout the academic year, designated holidays such as National Day, autumn break, Eid Al-Fitr, Eid Al-Adha, and weekends will provide students and faculty with essential breaks to celebrate cultural and religious festivities while maintaining continuity in the academic calendar.
Future Adaptability
The Ministry of Education retains the flexibility to evaluate and potentially adjust the academic calendar in subsequent years, including the possibility of transitioning between a two-term or three-term system. Regardless of the structure chosen, all academic frameworks must ensure a minimum of 180 school days per year to uphold educational standards and student engagement.
Higher Education and International Schools
While public schools adhere to the newly approved calendar, universities, technical colleges, and international schools have the autonomy to establish their academic schedules within the overarching five-year framework. This approach aims to promote flexibility and innovation while aligning with national educational objectives.
The implementation of this new academic calendar reflects Saudi Arabia’s commitment to advancing its educational landscape, fostering a conducive environment for learning, and preparing students for future challenges and opportunities.
