At a recent Cabinet meeting held at Qasr Al Watan in Abu Dhabi, the UAE government passed a federal traffic law aimed at regulating emerging transport technologies and updating vehicle classifications on the nation’s roads.
The legislation, announced by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, reflects the government’s commitment to keeping pace with rapid global changes in transportation means. The new law addresses the expansion of self-driving vehicles, electric cars, and personal modes of transit, ensuring that regulations align with technological advancements seen across the UAE’s road network.
Sheikh Mohammed emphasized the importance of the new regulations, stating that they leverage the technological progress characterizing the country’s infrastructure. The updated classifications and regulations will govern modern transportation options, including self-driving cars and diverse private transportation types.
The amendments to the federal traffic law aim to ensure that regulations match the developments in how people traverse the nation. In another significant development, the UAE government was briefed on the achievements of the Emirates Genome Council during the same Cabinet meeting. The Emirati Genome Programme, which aims to collect and analyze DNA samples from one million Emiratis, has made substantial progress, with over 600,000 samples collected to date.
Sheikh Mohammed highlighted the importance of citizen participation in the program, emphasizing that the collected samples will contribute to the development of a clearer understanding of genetic and inherited illnesses in the UAE population. The program aims to develop medicines specific to these diseases, thereby strengthening healthcare for future generations.
With over 1,000 medical professionals trained to assist with the program, the UAE is making significant strides in advancing medical research and enhancing healthcare outcomes for its citizens. Sheikh Mohammed urged continued cooperation with the comprehensive national medical program, emphasizing its role in promoting a healthier society and improving the well-being of future generations.
