Rest Houses for Delivery Workers

The initiative, set to be implemented from June 15 to September 15, 2024, aligns with the mandatory midday break policy aimed at safeguarding worker health and safety during the peak summer months

The UAE Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) has unveiled a comprehensive plan to install 6,000 rest stations for delivery service workers across the country. This initiative, set to be implemented from June 15 to September 15, 2024, aligns with the mandatory midday break policy aimed at safeguarding worker health and safety during the peak summer months.

To facilitate easy access to these stations, MoHRE will launch an interactive map allowing delivery workers to locate nearby rest areas conveniently. The rest stations will provide a vital respite for workers, ensuring they have a safe and comfortable place to rest during the mandated break hours of 12:30 PM to 3 PM.

This initiative is a collaborative effort involving MoHRE, the Roads and Transport Authority, Abu Dhabi’s Integrated Transport Centre, economic development departments, and major delivery companies. It extends the successful pilot program started last year, which established 365 rest stations for delivery workers.

Beyond the newly announced rest stations, numerous restaurants, shopping centres, retail stores, and cloud kitchens will also offer designated rest areas for delivery drivers. This widespread support underscores the sector’s commitment to worker welfare.

In a press statement, the Ministry emphasized the unique nature of the delivery services sector, highlighting that delivery workers, unlike other workers, are constantly on the move. “Given the essential nature of the materials they transport, timely delivery is crucial. This initiative ensures they have the necessary support to adhere to the midday break regulations while continuing their operations,” MoHRE stated.

The new rest stations will be equipped with shelters from sunlight, cooling systems, water, refreshments, and first aid facilities, in compliance with MoHRE’s rules. Employers are required to provide similar amenities at all work sites during the midday break period to protect workers from the harsh summer conditions.

MoHRE also reminded the public and employers that breaches of the midday break regulations can be reported via its call centre, app, or website, ensuring stringent enforcement of these critical safety measures.
