Tamil Nadu marks a significant stride towards gender inclusivity in its workforce with the appointment of M Veeralakshmi as the state’s and the nation’s first woman ambulance driver. The 30-year-old, previously employed as a cab driver in Chennai for three years, has attained this notable position, confirmed by the state government.
Born and raised in Theni, Veeralakshmi relocated to Chennai with her husband almost a decade ago. Her husband, already engaged as a driver, provided her with occasional opportunities to accompany him, allowing her to grasp the nuances of the profession through observation. Veeralakshmi’s journey from a cab driver to an ambulance driver reflects her dedication and determination to challenge societal norms.
Her g appointment as an ambulance driver on August 31, 2020, during a ceremony held at the Secretariat, signifies a remarkable achievement. Notably, merely four years ago, Veeralakshmi approached ANEW, a women’s welfare association in Anna Nagar, in search of employment opportunities. From seeking assistance to becoming the nation’s pioneer woman ambulance driver, Veeralakshmi’s journey is an inspiring testament to her resilience.
ANEW played a pivotal role in Veeralakshmi’s transformation, offering vocational training and job placement support tailored for women. Intrigued by the prospect, she enrolled in their driving course, drawing confidence from her observations of her husband’s driving skills. Veeralakshmi’s determination, coupled with her prior experience, has been instrumental in realizing her dream of becoming the first woman ambulance driver in Tamil Nadu and the entire nation.
