The Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which markets dairy products under the ‘Amul’ brand, has announced a price hike of ₹2 per litre for all variants of Amul milk. This increase will be effective starting Monday, June 3.
The price adjustment has been attributed to rising costs in operations and production. The last price hike occurred in February 2023. With the new increase, prices for various Amul milk variants will rise accordingly. For instance, the 500 ml Amul buffalo milk will now cost ₹36, 500 ml Amul Gold milk will be ₹33, and 500 ml Amul Shakti milk will be priced at ₹30.
Jayen Mehta, Managing Director of GCMMF, emphasized the necessity of this price adjustment to support farmers amid escalating production costs. “The hike is essential to compensate farmers for the increased cost of production,” Mehta stated.
In a statement, GCMMF explained that the ₹2 per litre increase translates to a 3-4% rise in the maximum retail price (MRP), which is relatively modest compared to the average food inflation rate. The federation noted that since February 2023, there has been no price increase for fresh pouch milk in major markets.
The organization highlighted that the price hike is driven by a significant rise in the overall cost of milk production and operations. Amul adheres to a policy where nearly 80 paise of every rupee paid by consumers goes directly to the milk producers. This price revision aims to ensure that milk producers continue to receive fair and sustainable prices for their milk, encouraging higher milk production.
The GCMMF believes that the revised prices will help in maintaining remunerative prices for milk producers, ensuring their financial stability and motivating increased milk production to meet growing demand.
