Jayaram Banan, the 64-year-old owner of the renowned South Indian restaurant chain Sagar Ratna, epitomizes the spirit of resilience and determination. His journey from washing dishes for a meager income to establishing a thriving business empire is a testament to his relentless pursuit of success.
Born in Udupi, Karnataka, Banan endured a difficult childhood marked by familial discord. Determined to break free from adversity, he fled his home at the tender age of 13, seeking refuge in Mumbai. Fate led him to the Hindustan Organic Chemicals (HOC) canteen in Panvel, Navi Mumbai, where he secured his first job as a dishwasher, earning a mere Rs 18 per month.
Despite the hardships, Banan’s unwavering commitment and perseverance propelled him forward. Over the course of eight years, he rose through the ranks, transitioning from a dishwasher to a waiter and eventually to the position of manager. His tenure at the canteen provided invaluable insights into the workings of a South Indian food establishment, laying the foundation for his entrepreneurial aspirations.
In 1973, Banan embarked on a new chapter in his life by relocating to Delhi, where he married his wife Prema. Seizing an opportunity, he secured a contract to establish the canteen at Central Electronics Ltd (CEL) in Ghaziabad, showcasing his business acumen and resourcefulness.
In 1986, Banan’s dream took shape as he inaugurated his first restaurant, Sagar, in Delhi’s Defense Colony. Armed with determination and fueled by his savings and support from friends and relatives, he embarked on a journey fraught with challenges. Despite humble beginnings, Sagar garnered attention and patronage, laying the groundwork for Banan’s vision of expansion.
Recognizing an opportunity to cater to the growing demand for authentic South Indian cuisine, Banan acquired Woodland restaurant in 1991, rebranding it as Sagar Ratna. This strategic move catapulted Sagar Ratna to prominence, solidifying its reputation as a premier destination for South Indian delicacies.
Today, Sagar Ratna stands as a beacon of success, with numerous outlets spanning across Canada, Singapore, and Bangkok. Banan’s indomitable spirit, coupled with his entrepreneurial foresight, has transformed a humble venture into a global enterprise, inspiring generations with his remarkable journey from rags to riches.
