Dubai has declared a significant environmental initiative by announcing a ban on all single-use plastic bags, effective from June 1, 2024. This bold move aims to encourage the use of reusable cloth bags and significantly reduce the city’s plastic waste footprint.
In an announcement made via X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, Dubai Municipality urged residents to “make the switch to reusable cloth bags and be part of the change.” The ban encompasses a wide range of single-use bags, including those made from plastic, paper, biodegradable plant materials, and biodegradable plastics. Specifically, any bag thinner than 57 micrometres falls under this ban.
However, the regulation does provide some exemptions. Bags that are thicker than 57 micrometres, as well as those used for wrapping vegetables, meat, chicken, bread, and garbage, will not be affected by the ban. These exceptions ensure that essential packaging needs are still met while minimizing environmental impact.
Until the ban is fully implemented on June 1, the current AED25 fils charge for single-use plastic bags will continue to be in effect. This interim measure is designed to gradually reduce reliance on single-use plastics and encourage the transition to more sustainable alternatives.
Dubai’s decision aligns with global efforts to combat plastic pollution and promote sustainability. By taking a firm stand against single-use bags, the city is setting a precedent for environmental responsibility and encouraging its residents to adopt more eco-friendly practices.
