Flying Wedge Defence and Aerospace Technologies, an Indian defence and aerospace company, achieved a significant milestone in Bengaluru on Friday by introducing the FWD-200B, touted as India’s maiden indigenous bomber unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).
Introducing the FWD-200B: India’s Own Combat UAV
The FWD-200B stands as a medium-altitude, long-endurance (MALE) unmanned combat aerial vehicle entirely conceptualised, designed, and manufactured in India. Boasting a payload capacity of 100 kgs, it is equipped to carry optical surveillance payloads and precision air-strike weapons, according to the company.
Fulfilling India’s Long-Awaited Dream
Speaking at the unveiling ceremony in Bengaluru, Suhas Tejaskanda, the founder of Flying Wedge Defence, emphasised that the FWD-200B realises India’s longstanding aspiration to produce a combat UAV domestically, after numerous unsuccessful attempts by agencies like the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
Revolutionising Cost-Efficiency in Defence
A notable highlight of the FWD-200B is its remarkable cost-effectiveness. While imported US Predator drones command a staggering price tag of Rs 250 crore, the domestically produced FWD-200B is expected to be available at just Rs 25 crores — representing a mere tenth of the cost, as affirmed by the firm.
Championing Self-Reliance in Defence
Tejaskanda further underscored that this achievement underscores the company’s unwavering commitment to self-reliance, positioning India as a frontrunner in providing cost-effective defence solutions.
Vision for the Future: A Nation’s Eagle Eye
With an endurance of 12-20 hours, maximum speed of 200 kts/370 kmph, and a ground control station range of 200 km, the FWD-200B is envisioned as the “nation’s eagle eye” and a formidable aerial defence against threats. Its unveiling represents a significant boost to India’s Make in India initiative, reducing reliance on expensive imports for strategic defence equipment like UAVs.
