An Indian startup based in Chennai is pioneering an ambitious project to develop electric aircraft, aimed at revolutionizing air travel within cities. The ePlane Company, spearheaded by founder and CEO Satya Chakravarthi, is set to unveil electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft, promising swift and efficient transportation solutions.
Scheduled to commence from March 2025, the research and development efforts at the ePlane Company are focused on designing eVTOL aircraft capable of accommodating four passengers, in addition to the pilot. Unlike conventional vehicles that often endure hour-long commutes, these electric aircraft are projected to cut down travel time significantly, with journeys taking as little as 14 minutes to reach their destination.
The vision behind the ePlane Company’s endeavor is not only to introduce electric air taxis but also to alleviate congestion in urban areas, particularly within cities like Chennai. By leveraging cutting-edge technology, the startup aims to offer commuters a faster, more sustainable mode of transportation, ultimately easing the strain on existing infrastructure.
Moreover, The ePlane Company is not stopping at passenger transportation alone. The company is also venturing into drone development for commercial purposes, with plans to introduce drones capable of carrying payloads ranging from 2 to 50 kilograms. These drones are expected to play a vital role in various industries, from logistics to surveillance, further bolstering the company’s position in the burgeoning field of urban air mobility.
Looking ahead, The ePlane Company anticipates obtaining certification for its electric aircraft by March of the following year, with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) overseeing the process. While certification may take up to two years to complete, the startup remains steadfast in its commitment to delivering innovative solutions that redefine urban transportation.
In parallel, other players in the industry, such as InterGlobe Enterprises and US-based Archer Aviation, are gearing up to introduce all-electric air taxi services in India by 2026. This collaborative effort aims to connect the national capital to Gurugram in a mere 7 minutes, promising unparalleled speed and convenience for travelers.
