The Kerala government has announced plans to provide hands-on AI training to 80,000 secondary school teachers. The training, spearheaded by Kerala Infrastructure and Technology for Education (KITE), aims to equip educators with the skills needed to harness artificial intelligence effectively in the classroom.
The AI training program will span three days and will cover a diverse range of techniques, focusing primarily on simplifying complex documents found in PDFs, images, and videos. Teachers will learn how to generate concise summaries while retaining essential information, and even create new content using AI tools.
K. Anvar Sadath, Chief Executive Officer of KITE, emphasized the importance of the program in empowering teachers to navigate the potential risks associated with AI while promoting responsible usage. “This program will give opportunities to teachers to identify potential risks associated with AI while fostering a culture of responsible AI usage,” said Sadath.
The training curriculum will also include instruction on image generation techniques, enabling teachers to create and edit subject-specific visuals. Participants will learn to transform images into cartoons or paintings and integrate text seamlessly, enhancing their ability to engage students through multimedia content.
One of the key aspects of the training will be the exploration of deepfake technology, with teachers creating their own avatars to understand the concept. This hands-on experience will provide insights into privacy concerns and algorithm bias, crucial considerations in the age of advanced AI.
Each training batch will consist of 25 teachers, who will utilize their laptops and mobile phones to facilitate learning. Prior to the rollout of the program, 180 Master Trainers of KITE underwent a rigorous one-month AI training program to ensure the effective delivery of instruction.
By investing in the professional development of teachers and equipping them with AI skills, the Kerala government is taking significant strides towards preparing students for the challenges and opportunities of the digital age. The initiative underscores Kerala’s commitment to innovation in education and sets a precedent for integrating technology responsibly into the classroom.
