Indian Railways has announced a dedicated budget of Rs 6,500 crore for the fiscal year 2024-25, signalling a significant step towards achieving complete electrification of the rail network. With 95% of the Broad Gauge already electrified, this allocation aims to revolutionise the railway system and align with the nation’s sustainability goals.
Driving Economic Growth and Environmental Benefits:
Senior railway officials underscore that the electrification program goes beyond environmental benefits, serving as a catalyst for economic growth. By creating jobs, reducing reliance on imported fossil fuels, and positioning Indian Railways as a modern and efficient engine of the nation’s economy, electrification promises both environmental and economic dividends.
Rapid Progress Towards Sustainability:
Indian Railways’ rapid electrification efforts are propelling the nation towards a sustainable future. In the fiscal year 2023-24 alone, 7,188 kilometres were electrified, marking a historic achievement with far-reaching implications for economic and environmental well-being.
Achieving Milestones:
Nearly 95% electrification of the Broad Gauge network stands as a testament to India’s progress in electrification projects. With seamless traction facility now available in 21 states and UTs, Indian Railways is solidifying its position as the national transporter while significantly reducing its carbon footprint.
The Shift to Electric Traction:
The dominance of diesel locomotives is giving way to electric trains, offering a cleaner and more efficient alternative. By powering trains with electricity, Indian Railways aims to slash carbon emissions by 24% by 2027-28, marking a substantial contribution to environmental sustainability.
Key Electrification Projects:
Critical sections, including Ahmedabad-Rajkot-Okha (499 Kms), Bengaluru-Talguppa (371 Kms), and Bathinda-Firozpur-Jalandhar (301 Kms), were electrified last year, demonstrating tangible progress in the electrification drive.
Impressive Milestones Achieved:
Over the past decade, over 42,000 kilometres of tracks have been electrified, bringing the total electrified network to an impressive 95% of the broad-gauge network. These achievements reaffirm Indian Railways’ commitment to sustainable and efficient transportation infrastructure.
