The State Water Transport Department inaugurated “Indra,” a solar-powered tourist boat, on Kochi Lake, expanding the city’s tourism offerings. With two daily trips scheduled along a designated route, the initiative aims to enhance the tourism potential of Kochi.
Features of Indra: India’s Longest Solar-Powered Cruise Boat
Indra stands as India’s longest solar-powered cruise boat, equipped with an air-conditioned lower deck and capable of accommodating up to one hundred passengers. Constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 3.7 crore, Indra showcases a commitment to sustainable tourism and innovation in water transport.
Sustainable Operation: Harnessing Solar Energy
Powered entirely by a 25-kilowatt solar power system, Indra relies on renewable energy sources to navigate Kochi’s waterways. However, in instances of insufficient solar power, the boat seamlessly transitions to electricity, ensuring uninterrupted service.
Cruising with Indra: Tourist Destinations and Services
Indra’s two-hour-long trips, operating at 11 am and 4 pm daily, offer passengers a scenic journey encompassing popular tourist spots such as the Bolgatty Palace, Vallarpadam Container Terminal, and Fort Kochi. Passengers can revel in the city’s rich cultural heritage while enjoying the comfort and convenience of solar-powered travel.
Ticketing and Amenities: Aboard the Solar-Powered Experience
Tickets for Indra’s voyage are priced at Rs 300 for adults and Rs 150 for children, providing affordable access to a unique tourist experience. Additionally, food services, arranged by Kudumbasree, are available on board for passengers’ convenience. For bookings, contact: 94000 50351 or 94000 50350.
