A groundbreaking achievement in railway technology has been unveiled as a hydrogen fuel cell-powered train, the Flirt H2 model crafted by Swiss train manufacturer Stadler, has entered the Guinness World Records database. The train travelled an impressive 1,741 miles (2,803km) on a test track in Colorado, marking the longest distance ever covered by a hydrogen-powered multi-car passenger train on a single tank.
Continuous Operation
Throughout the gruelling 46-hour journey, which commenced on the evening of March 20 and extended into the following day, the Flirt H2 train did not require refuelling. Skilled drivers from Stadler and Ensco took turns operating the train, showcasing its remarkable endurance and efficiency.
Exceeding Expectations
The remarkable feat surpasses the Flirt H2’s advertised range of 460 km, demonstrating its capabilities under optimal conditions. Although the train’s operational efficiency on the test track likely contributed to its extended range, the achievement underscores the potential of hydrogen-powered trains in revolutionising sustainable transportation.
Unveiling the Powertrain
While specific details regarding the size of the fuel cells aboard the record-breaking train were not disclosed by Stadler, the Flirt H2 model equipped with 12 fuel cells of 100kW each hints at an impressive overall hydrogen powertrain of 1.2MW. This technological marvel is poised to redefine the future of rail travel, offering an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional diesel-powered locomotives.
Future Prospects
Stadler’s success in setting a new world record paves the way for the widespread adoption of hydrogen-powered trains. The Flirt H2’s upcoming deployment in California, where it will become the first hydrogen train in the United States, signals a significant milestone in the transition towards sustainable transportation solutions.
Executive Perspective
Ansgar Brockmeyer, Executive Vice-President of Marketing and Sales at Stadler, expressed pride in the Flirt H2’s performance, stating, “This world record establishes the ideal performance range of our hydrogen version of the best-selling Flirt Electric Multiple Unit, the Flirt H2.”
California’s Vision
The state of California has demonstrated its commitment to embracing eco-friendly transit options by ordering four four-car hydrogen fuel cell trains from Stadler for the California State Transportation Agency, with plans to potentially acquire six additional trains in 2024. This strategic investment underscores the state’s dedication to reducing carbon emissions and advancing sustainable mobility initiatives.
