The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is gearing up to kickstart the development of a crucial four-lane highway connecting Tiruvallur to Tirupati, with an estimated investment of 985 crore. Scheduled to commence by August, this ambitious project aims to slash the travel time between these two key destinations to just 90 minutes, promising enhanced connectivity and efficiency for commuters.
Award of Contract Marks Milestone in Road Expansion
Following a rigorous tendering process, Oriental Structural Engineers Pvt. Ltd secured the contract for the road expansion project on March 9. Covering a stretch of 44 kilometers, this initiative will transform existing two-lane roads into a seamless four-lane highway, complemented by service roads for enhanced accessibility. Moreover, the plan entails the construction of 20 strategically positioned underpasses at major junctions, facilitating smoother traffic flow for local commuters.
Access-Controlled Infrastructure and Toll Plaza Considerations
To ensure optimal traffic management, the revamped highway will feature access-controlled measures, restricting the entry and exit of local two-wheelers and cars along most sections. However, exceptions may exist at two intersection points, where the establishment of new toll plazas is under consideration. These toll facilities could further contribute to the maintenance and sustainability of the highway infrastructure.
Challenges and Concerns Amidst Progress
Despite the commendable progress, some voices of concern have emerged regarding the adequacy of the proposed infrastructure. K Vijayakumar, a resident-activist from Sevvapet, has highlighted the pressing need for six lanes to accommodate the current traffic density adequately. While the expansion to four lanes marks a significant step forward, it appears that further enhancements may be warranted to address the region’s burgeoning transportation demands effectively.
Delays and Hurdles in Project Execution
The road to progress has not been without its share of obstacles, as evidenced by the prolonged efforts to expand the Padi-Thiruninravur section over the past decade. Despite receiving approval for the 158 crore project back in 2013-14, substantial delays have hindered its timely execution. Land acquisition issues, notably concerning Ambattur traders and residents, have been a major stumbling block, impeding the project’s advancement. Furthermore, a significant portion of the allocated budget has been allocated primarily to road relaying, underscoring the complexities and challenges inherent in large-scale infrastructure initiatives.
As the NHAI gears up to embark on the construction of the Tiruvallur-Tirupati four-lane highway, the project holds immense promise for bolstering regional connectivity and streamlining transportation networks. While challenges persist, concerted efforts and strategic interventions are essential to overcome hurdles and realise the full potential of this transformative infrastructure endeavour.
