A vehicle capable of transitioning from a three-wheeler to a two-wheeler within minutes is on the horizon, thanks to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) approving a new category of vehicles known as “L2-5.” The L2-5 category combines elements from both two-wheeled and three-wheeled vehicles, offering a versatile solution to transportation needs. According to MoRTH’s notification dated February 29, vehicles in this category feature a unique design where a rickshaw-like structure integrates seamlessly with an e-scooter, transforming it into a front wheel. This modular design allows the vehicle to operate interchangeably as either a two-wheeler (L2) or a three-wheeler (L5).
Introducing the S32
The unveiling of the S32 by Hero MotoCorp-owned startup Surge has set the stage for the transformation in mobility. This electric three-wheeler can morph into a two-wheeler scooter in just three minutes, showcasing the practicality and efficiency of the L2-5 technology. Designed with self-employed individuals in mind, the S32 offers the flexibility of both an electric rickshaw and an electric scooter in a single vehicle.
Meeting Diverse Needs
The introduction of the L2-5 category heralds a new era of versatility in transportation. Beyond personal mobility, these vehicles cater to a range of purposes, from passenger transportation to goods delivery. This innovative model empowers individuals to meet their mobility needs while also providing an avenue for earning a livelihood through transportation services.
Modernising India’s Transport Sector
MoRTH’s decision to introduce the L2-5 category reflects a commitment to modernise India’s transportation sector. By addressing the evolving needs of consumers and promoting sustainable mobility solutions, the government aims to propel the country towards a more inclusive and environmentally conscious future.
Streamlining Processes
In a move to facilitate the adoption of L2-5 vehicles, MoRTH has streamlined the registration process. Vehicles within this category will receive a single registration number for both configurations, whether as a separated two-wheeled vehicle (L2) or a combined three-wheeled vehicle (L5). This simplification ensures ease of compliance and adherence to regulatory guidelines.
The advent of convertible vehicles represents a significant leap forward in transportation innovation. With the L2-5 category paving the way for versatile and adaptable solutions, the future of mobility in India is poised for transformation.
